National Scientific Center “P. I. Prokopovych Institute of Beekeeping”
The National Scientific Center “P. I. Prokopovych Institute of Beekeeping” is the leading scientific institution in Ukraine dedicated to beekeeping research, honey bee breeding, bee ecology, bee health, pollination technologies, apitherapy, and quality control of bee products. Operating under the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine, the Institute serves as the national scientific and methodological center for apiculture research, innovation, and development.
Founded in 1989 as the Ukrainian Research and Technological Institute of Beekeeping, the Institute was renamed in 1992 in honor of Petro Prokopovych, the founder of scientific beekeeping and inventor of the movable-frame hive. In 2005, the Institute was granted the status of National Scientific Center by the President of Ukraine.
Since 2019, the Institute has been headed by Professor Volodymyr O. Postoienko, Doctor of Agricultural Sciences.
Research Priorities
The Institute conducts fundamental and applied research in the following areas:
- Honey bee breeding and conservation of genetic resources;
- Carpathian and Ukrainian Steppe bee breeding programs;
- Bee ecology and pollinator conservation;
- Sustainable and organic beekeeping;
- Pollination of agricultural crops;
- Prevention and control of bee diseases;
- Veterinary support for apiculture;
- Quality and safety assessment of bee products;
- Development of dietary supplements and health products based on bee products;
- Apitherapy and biologically active bee products;
- Development of innovative beekeeping technologies;
- Environmental monitoring and assessment of anthropogenic impacts on pollinators;
- Support for the competitiveness and sustainability of the beekeeping sector.
Scientific Structure
The Institute includes research departments and specialized laboratories:
Research Departments
- Department of Breeding and Selection of Carpathian Bees;
- Department of Breeding and Selection of Ukrainian Steppe Bees, Forage Resources and Economics;
- Department of Bee Keeping Technologies and Production of Beekeeping Products.

- Laboratory of Bee Ecology;
- Laboratory of Scientific Development Implementation and Museum Activities;
- Laboratory of Quality and Safety Assessment of Beekeeping Products;
- Laboratory of Prevention of Bee Diseases;
- Laboratory of Apitherapy.
Research Infrastructure
The Institute maintains research apiaries and operates the experimental farm “Nectar”. Research activities are supported by specialized laboratories, breeding facilities, and field stations located in different regions of Ukraine.
The Institute also hosts the Leonid I. Bodnarchuk National Beekeeping Museum, one of the largest specialized beekeeping museums in Eastern Europe, and a scientific library containing approximately 8,000 publications dedicated to beekeeping, agriculture, biology, ecology, and related disciplines.
International Cooperation
The Institute actively cooperates with universities, research institutions, governmental organizations, beekeepers, agricultural producers, and international partners. Researchers participate in national and international projects, grant programs, scientific conferences, training activities, technology transfer initiatives, and programs focused on sustainable agriculture, biodiversity conservation, environmental protection, and pollinator health.
Legal Status
The National Scientific Center “P. I. Prokopovych Institute of Beekeeping” is a state research institution operating under the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine. The Institute is authorized to conduct scientific research, provide scientific and technical services, participate in national and international research projects, and cooperate with governmental, academic, non-governmental, and private-sector organizations.
